The dome over the Louvre Abu Dhabi is 180 metres across and built from eight layers, four of stainless steel outside and four of aluminium within, held apart by a steel frame five metres deep. They are stacked and rotated against one another so that roughly 7,850 stars never line up. Sunlight comes through the misalignment rather than through any single opening. Nouvel calls it the rain of light.

The effect exists only because the layers disagree. Align them and you have a colander.

The bead is built the same way. Perforations in more than one plane, offset, so what you see is not the holes but what happens between them. It changes as you turn it, which is the only honest way to make an object about light.

Bead necklace on a 40, 45 or 50cm chain. Inspired by Jean Nouvel's Louvre Abu Dhabi, Saadiyat Island, United Arab Emirates. Solid sterling silver 925.
