The cliffs along the Algarve are fossil dune, soft rock the sea has been taking apart for a long time. What is left is not a wall. It is a run of hollows.
Kengo Kuma's office and OODA took that for Vilamoura. The terraces are cut back into the body of the building rather than added to it, and the whole of it is wrapped in a second skin of cork. Cork is bark, stripped from the same tree every nine years, and it is mostly air. Both moves do the same work. The building is shaped by what has been taken out of it.
The ring is cut the same way. The band is the mass and the openings are what is missing, so the shadow sits inside the silver rather than beside it.
Inspired by Kengo Kuma and Associates and OODA's Fairways project, Vilamoura, Portugal. Solid sterling silver 925 with rhodium plating.
